Getting your artwork onto Steam
Made your pieces in the Artwork Maker or Steam Profile Studio? Here's how to put them on your profile. Workshop showcases need one extra step, so start there if that's what you made.
Workshop showcase
Five pieces in a row that play together as one banner. Each piece goes up as its own Workshop item. Steam normally only lets you post Workshop items for games you own, so you paste one line into the browser console to post them under Spacewar, a free test app everyone has.
- Open the Workshop upload page:
steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/edititem/767/3/ - Open the browser console with F12, then click Console.
- Paste this line and press Enter:
$J('#ConsumerAppID').val(480),$J('[name=file_type]').val(0),$J('[name=visibility]').val(0);It sets the app to Spacewar (480), the type to artwork, and the item to public. - Add
piece_01.gif, give it any title, and submit. - Do the same for pieces 2 to 5, in order. Steam clears the form after each upload, so paste the line again every time.
- On your profile go to Edit Profile, then Featured Showcase, add a Workshop Showcase, and pick the five pieces from left to right.
Artwork showcase
A wide piece with a thin strip next to it. Both go up as normal artwork.
- Open
steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/managegallery, or go to your profile's Artwork tab and click Upload. - Upload each piece on its own. The title and description can be anything.
- In Edit Profile, add an Artwork Showcase and pick the wide piece first, then the strip.
Featured Artwork showcase
One big piece.
- Upload it as artwork, the same way as above.
- In Edit Profile, add a Featured Artwork Showcase and pick it.
If something goes wrong
- Steam shows a still image instead of the animation
- Steam re-saves GIFs it thinks are too big, which freezes them. The Steam animation fix setting stops that and is on by default. If it still happens, lower the frame rate and make the pieces again.
- A piece is over 5 MB
- The tool normally lowers the colours until everything fits. If it can't, make the canvas shorter under Advanced settings, or use a shorter clip.
- The before and after previews drift apart
- That's only the preview. The files you download are lined up. Chrome and Edge keep the previews in sync; Firefox and Safari can drift a little.
- Making the pieces takes ages
- Pick Smallest files under Quality. Best quality looks nicer but takes three to five times longer.
Everything runs in your browser, so your files are never uploaded to us. The site is still early, so if something breaks, let us know. Thanks for using it. If it helped, a donation helps keep it running.
