The defaults suit most clips: 18 fps, every piece under 5 MB, and the fix that keeps Steam from freezing GIFs. Change them under Advanced settings.

Higher is smoother but makes bigger files. 18 works for most clips.

Once it fits, spend any space left over on better colours, then a higher frame rate. Takes one more pass.

This is where your clip gets cut. The grey strips are the gaps Steam leaves between pieces, so anything there won't show.

Getting the pieces onto Steam

  1. Workshop showcase: upload each piece as its own Workshop item, then add them to your Workshop Showcase in number order. Two or three rows need the row upgrades from the Points Shop.
  2. Artwork showcase: upload each piece as artwork, then pick them in order in your Artwork Showcase.
  3. A bigger source clip looks sharper, because Steam only ever scales pieces down.
  4. If Steam shows a still image, check that the Steam animation fix is on and try a lower frame rate.

The upload guide has every step, including the console line Workshop uploads need.

Make animated Steam artwork for your showcase

The Animated Steam Artwork Maker turns a GIF or video into the pieces Steam needs for an Artwork, Featured Artwork or Workshop showcase. Each piece is cut to the right size and lined up, so the showcase looks like one animation on your profile.

It runs entirely in your browser, so your files are never uploaded anywhere. It keeps each piece under Steam’s upload limit and applies the fix that stops Steam showing animated artwork as a still image.

  1. Drop in a GIF, MP4 or WebM and pick the showcase type.
  2. Move and resize the crop so the part you want fills the showcase.
  3. Export, then upload each piece to Steam in order using the upload guide.

Questions

What size is Steam artwork?

It depends on the showcase. The Artwork Showcase uses a wide main piece and a narrow side strip, the Featured Artwork Showcase one wide piece, and the Workshop Showcase five pieces in a row. The maker sizes every piece for you.

Why is my Steam artwork GIF not animated?

Steam sometimes shows the first frame only. The maker applies the usual fix when exporting; the guide on frozen GIFs explains it and what to try if it still happens.

Can I make a long or seamless Steam artwork?

Yes. The pieces are cut from one image so they join up across the showcase, and in the Steam Profile Studio they can line up with your profile background too.

Is it free?

Yes, completely, with no watermark and no account needed.
